brooms, brushes, cleaning clothes, etc. There should also be a storage room (or a larger service room) for supplies such as toilet tissues, soap, and cleaning powders.

Now, as for the matter of disinfectants, if plumbing fixtures are designed for utmost sanitation and are kept clean, no special disinfectants are necessary. Normal disinfecting-washing and cleaning ewill keep toilet rooms sanitary.


The helpfulness which a service institution can provide to management depends upon the experience and dependability, the skilfulness of its supervisory staff and the reliability of its operating personnel. The experience and skill of the service's supervisory staff enables it to comprehend the problem submitted and to devise the most efficient and economical plan for the determination of all essential facts.

Usually it is immaterial that the service institution has not previously engaged on an identical problem. No new problem is ever identical in all particulars with others before encountered, for there are always differences in individuals involved, their characteristics, location, surroundings, and the impulses and other pertinent influences.

Therefore, procedure on the part of the service organization can rarely be of a standardized type and, invariably, must be fitted to meet the special requirements of each problem. It is because of these ever-present factors what experience and dependable facilities are of vital importance in the selection of a service organization as an aid to management.

Management can be confident of the soundness of its judgment only when possessing accurate information of the constitution of each problem confronting it. Situations, in connection with which all ingredients are known to management, or are easily obtainable through routine inquiry, of course, present no problem. It is the mysterious single evildoer or a complex combination of cirv cumstances, the causes and composition of which are hidden from normal vision of management, that create actual problems. It is in the solution and efficient handling of these latter problems that management requires accurate information upon which to make sound judgment.

A private detective agency is not generally known for its activities in the commercial field, and particularly the valuable services rendered to theatres throughout the country. Yet many of nationally-known concerns, including theatres and major motion-picture companies, utilize such crime prevention services.

In theatre management, the main problems, as in many other fields, are those involving protection of the revenue.

Protection of revenue commences with the selection of employes, and prudent management undertakes to ascertain that all the applicants previous employment performance and his method of living are such as favorably to commend him for the position he seeks. The scope of such investigation would be determined by the degree of trust and responsibility which would be the employe's.



Some agencies have an employment record card which embraces the past record and complete data of the employe or applicant.

The greatest loss of revenue doubtlessly occurs through dishonest practices by ticket sellers and ticket takers and through false entries by dishonest local managers. Usually management has anticipated such losses through these channels and has adopted working rules and checks designed to prevent them. Such rules and checks are effectual only when fully observed. To assure of invariable compliance with such rules and to receive the contemplated value of the checks established, there needs to be competent and regular inspection, unknown to the employes concerned, of individual performance. This service, commonly referred to as testing or checking, is performed by representatives of the service company operating as ordinary patrons; or by others who count (clock) patrons purchasing tickets between hours which can later be checked With the box-office report.

A number of theatres and theatre circuits engage this type of service for checking all angles of efficiency, honesty, and courtesy of employes, condition of various lounges, parcel room, and rest rooms.

In other cases, a special secret service is furnished by using operatives as a regular employe, such as cashier, doorman, usher, or assistant manager. The confidential information secured in this manner is most valuable to clients. Clients are also served by clocking attendance, indicating the exact number of persons admitted during certain hours.

In many cases, detective agencies are engaged to place a certain employe under surveillance, in order to ascertain just how he spends his time during and after

business hours, his associates, habits, expenditures, and so forth.

After the end of employment, it'has been found advisable in businesses employing in positions of trust and responsibility persons Whose performance might induce or discourage patronage, to inquire into the manner of individual performance,periodically and with regularity, to ascertain if the system adopted for the security of the business is being maintained or if laxity in this or other improper practices have begun.

Activities such as embezzlement and thefts by individual employes, conspiracies to defraud, property depredation, hold-up, robbery, and burglary are crimes which should be promptly investigated, and the offenders speedily detected and brought to justice.

Investment in the services of a private detective agency to investigate crimes of this sort and to cooperate with the peace authorities for the successful prosecution of the guilty pays large dividends in the warning thus given that such offenses against the affected business will be speedily and energetically investigated and the offenders relentlessly prosecuted.

Such service consists in part of the display of metal protective signs at such strategic locations as box office, doors, lobby, check room, lounge rooms, and employesi locker rooms. These signs daily informing all employes and the general public that such theatres are protected create a psychological effect which cannot be over-emphasized, and act as a definite deterrent against all types of crimes, losses, dishonest acts, and other irregularities.

A number of theatres regularly use uniformed guards, or special officers, for protection purposes, as well as for the psychological effects. This is particularly true in theatres sometimes fre WITH PROPER ATTENTION on the port of assigned personnel, ioniforial and sanitary service from outside sources is reduced to a minimum, although there are companies which will fake over call this work. In extermination activities, on the other hand, the careful theatre owner will employ specially trained, commercial men of proved integrity.
