The Alapai Theatre

Honolulu. Hawaii

Another of the new theatres projected for the Hawaiian Islands is this new 1200-seat neighborhood house. On an odd-shaped lot with diHicult grading conditions, this theatre-and-store project is designed to draw the maximum rental return from the available square footage. A large stadium floor doubles the auditorium size and projects out over the foyer and store area. The lounge and toilet rooms constitute a separate suite in one corner. All

equipment rooms are confined to the second level back of the stadium. Of particular note is an exceptionally fine, high-rental store dominating the corner location; but, by carrying the marquee treatment completely around the project and using island display cases between the inner and outer sidewalks, theatrical feeling is retained. A kind climate permits direct access to the circular foyer through structural glass doors at either side of the island box office.

THE POSITIONING OF THE ISLAND DISPLAY CASES BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER SIDEWALKS AND THEIR USE AS SUPPORTS FOR THE WIDE MARQUEE CANOPY, IS AN INTERESTING ARCHITECTURAL DEVELOPMENT.
