For $96,000, Ahuntsic, Quebec, Gets a Modern, 715-Seat Cinema

The Ahuntsic Theatre

The Ahuntsic Theatre, in Ahuntsic, Quebec, was designed by the firm of Luke, Little, and Mace for the United Amusement Corporation, Ltd. The house -costing $70,000 (including air conditioning), with $25,000 for equipment-is constructed of a steel frame, with concrete block walls and white stucco front (left) embellished with red and blue Vitrolite.

The auditorium (below) is designed to serve 715 of the areas estimated 15,000 population, composed, for the most part, of workers; In decoration three shades of salmon pink, with silver trim, has been used. The treatment of the side walls represents a departure from the usual, in that the light troughs have been placed half way between the ceiling line and the top of the wainscoting. By giving the upper portion of the wall a horizontally splayed effect, and keeping the lower portion relativer even, an unusual effect is obtained, heightened by slightly dropping the edges of the central ceiling panel.

Lounge and toilet rooms are located in the basement under the lobby (with box office on the far side from the entrance doors) and the crush lobbies on either side.
