Construction Uses for Vermiculite Products

Fire Protection Highlights the Advantages Of a Widely Accepted, Versatile Material

VERMICULITE is the generic term tor a number at hydrous silicates derived from the alteration of mica. When the material as mined (abOVe, left) is suddenly exposed to high temperatures, the water held between the laminations explodes, turning material into the commercial product (above, left).

Given impetus by the recent stress laid upon fire protection in new construction, vermiculite building materials have won increasingly wide acceptance in the theatre construction field. The extensive research pointing out vermiculiteis superiority for the fireproofing of beams, columns, fioors, and ceilings has resulted in its wide-spread adoption by specifying architects.

Vermiculite is the basis for a diversified assortment of materials used in building construction. Its high fusion point-2,560 degrees*is far beyond that of many recognized fire-proof materials, including asbestos.

Producers of vermiculite have recently

EXCELLENT MURAL EFFECTS may be obtained by painting (below) over vermiculite acoustical plaster. Fine artistic eftects can be achieved with out any diminution of the acoustic properties 0! the material. (All photographs through the courtesy of the Universal Zonolite Insulation Company.)
