stripes and other designs. Custom-cut inserts of trademarks, lettering or pictorial representations can be provided. On large jobs, manufacturers designers work with expert installers in creating distinctive floor treatments.

Repair and Maintenance

Since floor surfaces of this material are composed of individual tiles or special insets, repair of damage is a simple and inexpensive undertaking. Only a few tiles need be replaced instead of a complete recovering job. The material is cemented in place and can be applied on any existing floor.

Because it is laid a tile at a time, installation of an asphalt tile floor need not interfere with normal traffic. Only a small space needs to be blocked off for workmen. The tile can be walked on immediately after laying and workmen can move on to the next section.

Its long-wearing properties, decorative possibilities, and ease of cleaning, combined with low installation and maintenance cost, are the chief factors which have brought asphalt tile into extensive use in theatres and other places of public assembly.

Ordinary sweeping with only occasional washing with water and nonalkali soap or cleaner, and an occasional Waxing with a good water emulsion wax recommended by the tile manufacturer is all the attention usually required. Cleaners or waxes containing free fat or oil will soften and disintegrate the asphalt tile. Varnishes, lacquers and the like should never be applied.

Colors, being stable chemical compounds, cannot fade nor bleach, and, because they go clear through the tile from top to bottom, cannot wear off.

Wear Resistance

As an example of the long life of the material, asphalt tile was installed in the Time & Life, Associated Press and 630 Fifth Avenue buildings of Rockerfeller Center when the buildings were erected more than ten years ago. Since that time, it is estimated that the doors have borne a total tradic load of 130,000,000 persons, and yet the floors are still in first-class condition, according to the Centers maintenance men.

In one of the New York Worldts Fair buildings, fioored with asphalt tile, more than 20,000,000 persons were counted walking through the building in two years. After this usage, a section of the floor at the entrance was taken up and subjected to minute laboratory examination. Scientists were able to discover only an infinitesimal loss in thickness.

Moisture Resistance

Resistance to moisture is another important attribute of the material, especially in the case of buildings where concrete on or below grade must have a door covering. Engineers assert that asphalt tile is virtually the only smoothsurfaced, resilient material that can be successfully used in such locations because it is not affected by dampness which is generally present when concrete is in contact with the ground.

Concrete is considered above grade when it is above ground and has heated and ventilated space beneath. Concrete only slightly above ground and having
