Freon-A Modern Chemical Achievement

Use of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

Made General by Halogenated Hydrocarbons

Eighteen years ago the Freon refrigerants had not been announced to the world. There was an active demand for a group of non-toxic and non-flammable refrigerants. Dr. Thomas Midgley, Jr., and a group of chemists, engineers, physicists, and toxicologists were working on the problem. Midgley and Henne discovered that a group of chemical compounds called halogenated hydrocarbons having one or more Huorine atoms had the desired properties, and certain of these compounds were practically ideal for the purpose. In April, 1930, Midgley announced these products to the scientific world, and the following year Kinetic Chemicals, Inc., first offered them for sale.

The American refrigerating equipment industry soon adapted machinery to the use of Freon. Today there is scarcely a refrigerating machinery company in the United States, and very few in the world, that does not build equipment for Freon. i

The Freon refrigerants have been tested for safety by the United States Bureau of Mines and the Underwriters Laboratories.

All of the electric refrigerators which are now sold contain one or another of the Freon refrigerants, and practically all of the air-conditioning equipment which is offered contains these refrigerants. During the past year more tonnage of refrigerating machinery has

been built for Freon than for all other refrigerants combined.


In the past decade refrigerating machinery through its far-hung uses has given us a whole new set of eating and living habits. Preservation of foodstuffs and conditioning of the air we breathe have added immeasurably to our health, comfort and general enjoyment of life.

Twenty years ago electric refrigerators in the home were a novelty, and only a fortunate few had them. Most of them were noisy, and few of them efficient. Today electric refrigerators are built to operate so efficiently that they require less than the amount of current consumed by an electric light bulb.

Of the nearly thirty million homes in the United States that are wired for electricity, slightly more than half have electric refrigerators, and around 4,000,000 new ones are being sold each year.

But the foods put into household refrigerators could not be had without the refrigeration that protects them on their way to the home. Fresh meat is chilled at the packing house, shipped in refrigerated cars, stored by the wholesaler in

refrigerated warehouses, and by the retailer in walk-in coolers or refrigerated display cases, or both. Citrus fruits or vegetables are chilled in pre-coolers before shipping and are preserved by refrigeration until the day you buy them. The ships that transport bananas from Central America have cooled, airconditioned cargo holds in order that your fruits may be delivered to you in the most palatable condition.

Through a more recent development* quick freezing-the flavor and quality of perishable foodstuffs are preserved. These quick-frozen products are becoming more common every day, and to keep them in a frozen condition merchants are installing new low-temperature refrigerators and new display cases.


Everyone has become familiar with air-conditioning, enjoying its benefits in theatres, motion picture houses, department stores, shops, office buildings and chain stores. In practically every case one or another of the Freon refrigerants are used.


Most complete domestic air conditioning now installed is for new homes. The recent development, however, of efficient, self-contained units that provide economical room air-conditioning is now meeting the demand for home and office use. A number of leading equipment manufacturers are offering models that perform complete summer air conditioning.


The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was interested in affording the public an entirely air-conditioned sleeping car train from New York to Chicago. In order to provide the train with lightweight equipment, it was necessary to have a safe refrigerant that would neither cause a panic nor injure any of the passengers in case it leaked into the cars. The Capitol Limited, as the train was named, was equipped with airconditioning apparatus containing a Freon refrigerant.

At the same time the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad was equipping its crack train, the George Washington.

Today 100 per cent of all mechanically air-conditioned railroad cars in the United States employ Freon refrigerants; and the majority of the air-conditioned cars, especially on the longer runs, are merchanically equipped.

Now motor buses are being air-conditioned. All the equipment built for these buses so far has employed a Freon refrigerant.


A few years ago it was found that it was nearly impossible for the native
