of $15 a square (10 by 10 feet), or 15 cents a square foot.

About 90 per cent of the roofs of business buildings are covered by either metal, paper, felt, or composition. For those the manufacturer recommends that there be used 2 gallons of its coating material to the square. The figures, on that basis, afford an interesting comparison:

At this point the property owner is likely to have the thought, "Admitting all this to be true, what do I know about the ability and willingness of the manu: facturer to make good his representations?" To which the company makes answer that it gives a written guarantee, printed on the customers copy of each order, which reads:

ttShould .......................................... .. roof coating be applied according to our simple printed instructions and the account discharged per terms of order and fail to give you roof protection for seven years from invoice date, we hereby agree to furnish at no charge suffcient additional coating for you to keep your roof in a water-proof condition for the full duration of the seven year guarantee period],

In recognition of the fact that in metropolitan centers few property owners have facilities for applying roof coating, the manufacturers New York office has arranged with experienced and reliable roofers (employing none but union labor and protected, fully, by employerls liability, workmenls compensation and other casualty insurances), for applying the coating at the cost shown above, with provision for the issuance of a certificate by the applier, that the work has been done in strict accordance with the manufacturers instructions, thus validating the guarantee.

A distinct advantage presented by the use of such a coating as is here referred to, is that its repeated use, at stated intervals (7 years), has the effect of building up a more elastic and stronger roof; as contrasted with the ordinary roof covering, the renewal of which latter, at the end of its period of usefulness, is a matter of expense and inconvenience which the owner has no alternative but to more or less regretfully anticipate.

Finally, while the manufacturer says it appreciates that a black roof is not a "pretty" roof, at the same time it has manfully resisted all suggestions to color the product. Its theory, borne out by numerous tests, is that the introduction of any dry pigment (for coloring purposes) into the product, can have but one result-em interpose dry, non-elastic elements into the elastic fibre of the asphalt, thus rendering it brittle and nullifying its essential characteristic, elasticity.

BEFORE APPLYING the asbestos root coating. the old covering should be closely inspected and all

breaks and leaks marked for proper patching.

The workers in the picture above are doing this iob.

In the bottom picture will be seen a close-up of patching before the Battleship coating is used.
