In Newport (N.H.) THE CONISTON had been operated for years by the original builder, and only recently was purchased by one of the large chains. The problem was to improve the obsolete and inadequate facilities and to present a more inviting appearance that would maintain its standing in a highly competitive location.

The remodeling cost was $43,000, plus chairs and carpets totaling $13,000 more. A wide marquee, relocation of the boxoiiice, replacement of a large pier by a small cylindrical column, enlarging and relocating of the confection stand, removing partitions in the foyer, and opening of stairways to the balcony, created an illusion of great spaciousness. New lounges and a manageris office were made from the properties flanking the lobby.

RESULT: Admission prices were raised, and patronage noticeably increased, especially from the residents of the summer resort colony.

T-HE LADIES' LOUNGE is carried out in highly lacquered hitch plywood with mirror panels and modem ceiling lighling.
