The Autocrat in-car speaker is manufactured by Autocrat, Inc. Each set of two speakers and one junction box is enhanced by all-weather construction with specially molded one-piece, tropicalimpregnated cones. Junction boxes feature a quick fastener or clamp for posts and quick plug-in connections. Cords come in either coiled or straight grades. A sealed-in glass, concession light-signal on top of the junction box and with a separate switch on the speaker unit provides an easy-to-see, effective communication from patron t0 concessionaire.

Other Miscellaneous Equipment

Heavy-duty ramp switch panels for the control, safety and testing of speakers, are available for driveeins with capacities ranging from 300 cars to 1000 cars.

From the west coast comes a new model, the Brunhouse speaker (formerly

BRUNHOUSE speaker and junction box assembly.

known as the Conroy & Knowles speaker) manufactured by J. S. Brunhouse. The 4" speaker cone is of the latest water-repellant material. Speaker frame consists of a symmetrical stamping of heavy guage metal, plated after stamping and fitted with an Alnico No. 5 permanent magnet of 1.47 ozs. and a double-U type yoke for return magnetic

.Hux. As the manufacturer states, this

mechanism is not just a radio speaker adapted to drive-in usage, but a speaker designed specifically for its outdoor job. It is claimed that this purposeful design produces an extremely rugged speaker with a low mortality rate.

The speaker units hang at an angle from arms extending from the casting so that the louvres slant toward the ground and provide excellent weather protection even in a driving rain. The speaker cone is placed % of an inch behind louvres for added protection.

Speaker cases, hanging bracketfbatflae and associated junction cover are all made of heavy gauge drawn duraluminum, an alloy of aluminum roughly equal to mild steel in strength. The junction box casting is of aluminum, mounted atop the pipe support and held at the proper height by a cast-in shoulder, the casting being secured to the pipe by two Allen set screws.

A special live rubber moulded bumper at the rear of the speaker cushions it in contacts with the supporting pipe and minimizes the element of rattle when the speaker is hung from the car window with the housing against the glass.

Acoustical properties have received due consideration. Manufacturer states that the area between the bangle and louvres provides an air column designed to match the cavity provided by the housing and its associated breather. This proper acoustic balance is said to greatly enlarge frequency range of the reproduction.

Introduced in 1948, the new DeVry in-car speaker, manufactured by the DeVry Corporation; is an interesting example of modern design applied to drivein electronics. The speaker housing, constructed from an aluminum alloy of high tensile strength is of the infinite-baffle type. It is finished in popular, weatherresistant hammerloid. All requisite hardware is of stainless steel. The speaker cone is chemically treated for weather resistance.

Sound is transmitted through a Series of six curved louvres, carefully arranged to prevent water from reaching the speaker cone inside the housing. Cone donsation moisture drains off through holes bored in the housing.

The speaker unit, a five-inch Alnico 5" permanent magnet, is equipped with a wide range of itlowsi, for music and Hhighs" for voice. The volume control covers a broad range of frequencies. As the manufacturer states, tiEvery advancement in design, mechanics and

electronics was utilized to the fullest degree to attain the highest possible efficiency of operation and matchless high fidelity of reproduction in the new speaker}7

For ready attachment, to car windows, sunshades, rear-view mirrors, or lap robe cords, the handle on the back of the speaker housing features simple grip design. Car windows can be kept closed during inclement weather, a factor that could extend the active operating season in many localities.

The entire DeVry speaker assembly, a compact unit for easy handling, is made for mounting on either a 11/2" or a 2" speaker post. The terminal box is finished like the speaker brackets and handles. By the substitution of lugs for solder, dismantling of speaker connections is facilitated. The matching line transformer in the weather-proof ton minal box is vacuum impregnated to minimize breakdown and corrosion.

Other Miscellaneous Equipment

Absolute control over the distribution of sound to each ramp in the drive-in is claimed for the new ramp switch panel. Although the standard DeVry panel is designed to accommodate 15 ramps, panels for any number of ramps are available on order.

Connections are by terminal blocks. Constant loading is stated to be maintained on the amplifier at all times, regardless of whether the individual ramp lines are turned on or off.

DIT-MCO is the trade name for spookers manufactured by the Drive-In Theatre Manufacturing Company. Two of three principal models are in-car typos; while the third is a standee speaker designed for use near the screen where there may be seats; or for use on back ramps where trucks may be parked.

The large Dit-Mco in-car speaker is approximately 71/2"x5"x3" deep. Of cast aluminum construction, it is protected and decorated with two coats of baked enamel, hammcrloid finish.
