Today operating costs are higher and profits considerably lower. The total national motion picture gross in 194903 estimated at $1,342,000,000. This is an approximate average of $60,000 per year per theatre.

THEATRE COSTS

During the year 1949 in 37 states, there was a total of 437 new theatres and major structural alterations, entailing a total expenditure of $30,017,000. This did not include refurnishing projects.

The tabulation of theatre costs shown in Table I reveals several things. The first is the terrific rise in costs which has taken place in the last ten or fifteen years. It will be noted that present day costs are more than twice as high as they were in the base year of 1926 and almost three and one-half times what they were in low year of 1933, when the index figure was sixty-two.

It also illustrates the fallacy of the cubic foot method of arriving at theatre reproduction costs without taking into consideration the seating capacity. Also in passing, it should be noted that the square foot basis has no value as far as determining the reproduction costs of the theatre. A few generalizations can be made relative to cubical foot costs and per seat costs, but these are generalizations only and a great many things can influence these one way or the other.

Generally speaking, the smaller the seating capacity of the theatre, the lower the cubic foot cost and also the unit volume-cubical content per seat. This is shown in Table II. This is due primarily to the simpler type of plan and construction in the smaller theatre. A minimum theatre would probably consist of about 400 seats, minimum stage or screen-platform space, and minimum lobby and toilet room areas. Such a theatre would show an approximate relationship of one seat to each 230

cubic feet. This is just about as tight as any theatre can be built.

As a second generalization, it can be stated that cubic foot prices for a one-floor theatre will be lower than for a theatre with a balcony. This is true up to a certain point. When the seating capacity reaches a thousand seats or more, the cubical content per seat of a one-floor house is practically the same as for a balcony type house. The

AREA FACTORS

The cubical content per seat will vary over wide limits. The factors which influence this ratio are varied, and, of course, are not applicable in each and

long lobbies and foyers to get to the auditorium, this naturally increases the cubical content. If the site itself is of such a shape or of such dimensions that it cannot be used to the maximum efficiency, this also will increase the ratio of cubical content per seat. The size and extent of the overhang of the balcony over the orchestra floor will influence the height of the auditorium. If a
