NUGGET Hanover, N. H.

Located near the Dartmouth campus, and replacing a theatre destroyed by fire in 1944, the new Nugget has a restrained facade of colonial styling. Two small, inconspicuously located display frames are the only exterior indications that this is a theatre.

It was the goal of the architects to achieve neither a colonial death mask, nor on the other hand, a cold, strictly functional machine, but rather to absorb and adapt progressive elements to local conditions which require some reference to tradition.

Two entrance doorways lead from the terrace in front of the building. The center of the lobby has an island arrangement, with a ticket booth at each end, and stairs leading up to the office of the Hanover Improvement Society, which operates the theatre, and down to basement lounges and boiler room.

EXTREME SlMPLlClTY in every respect characterizes the Nugget. This heavy accent on lunction and the almost complete absence at any kind of

adornment is altogether appropriate in this small New England community. End walls at the lobby have murals depicting the history ol the area.
