Ben Schlanger . . . the Man

What sets a man down a road that he never expected to travel? In the case of Ben Schlanger, three seemingly unrelated incidentsethe Florida building boom and bust of the early 192(Vs, a telephone call, and a business failurevawere the instruments that fate used to forge an outstanding career in theatre architecture and design. Like many a young and struggling architect, Schlanger left his home in New York City in 1925 to try his hand at some of the fabulous construction activity that was pushing further and further into the interiors of the lush Florida real estate. The boom came to an abrupt and disastrous halt, and even today half completed bridges leading into the jungle offer mute testimony of the dreams and fortunes that were smashed. Schlanger found himself left with a fine tan, a head full of ideas, and very little else.
