Install Large Screen

It is recommended that the widest practical screen be installed with a cor responding height at least three-fifths of this width. These larger screen sizes would be limited only by the available light, the vertical and horizontal audience viewing angles, and the front-seat viewing distance. Very large theatres with large prosceniums should be individually considered. In general, such houses will be limited by the maximum useable height of the picture, which in a few cases will exceed the 20 feet used in the example.

Several factors must be considered in the final selection of a screen size and its location on the stage. These include the vertical sight-line considerations for seats in the back-center and back-sides 0f the orchestra which may have a limited view of the top of the screen due to the balcony overhang. If a house has a second balcony, the back seats of the first balcony will also have a limited view of the top of the screen due to the overhang of the second balcony, Each house must evaluate its own problem of loss of seats, if any, which may have to be taken in order to gain the advantage of presenting pictures on a much larger screen.

A practical decision as to the screen size is finally made, taking into account the following elements: Available lens sizes coupled with the projection throw; the position of the screen on the stage; and the maximum picture width that will permit the height still to be in a five to three ratio.

Screen Frame

The wings, cornice, and base ramp of the screen could be covered with any of the white materials currently used for 2-D screens. If stereophonic horns are

to be located back of the wings, the wing material should be porous, just as for any sound screen. The side surrounds may be mounted on dollies if they must be moved to frame pictures of dinerent sizes, or be moved to clear the stage for live shows.

The surface of the screen must have a

metalized coating if the same screen is to be used for both 3-D and 2-D picture presentation. The screen must, of course. be porous for sound. Many manufacturers are developing screen materials with high light return capability and good light distribution.

Aperture Plates

Each aperture plate for the new aspect ratio should be carefully filed to go with its associated projection machine and lens so that the image on the screen will accurately fit the projection area of the screen. For houses with low projection angles, the aperture will be about 0.325

by 0.496 inches. As the projection angle increases, the sides of the aperture should be tapered, the top and bottom curved slightly if the screen is curved, and the height of the aperture gradually reduced.

The minimum height should be 0.470 inches for houses with high projection angles.

In the installation of the new aperture plate, it is recommended that it be placed further from the film than normally, in order to throw the edges of the picture slightly out of focus and produce a soft edge to the picture at the junction of the picture and the surround. No projected light should fall directly on the surround.
