adaptable to all, and the price settles at a level available to the possibilities of a larger proportion of the theatres in general, there is a great field for imnrovement in the next few years.


There are approximately 2550 cinemas in India. The vast majority of these are antiquated in structure and design. In addition, there are about 500 mobile cinemas which service out of the way villages. During the past two years there has been a slight increase in the construction of new theatres and, at the same time, a substantial increase in the renovating and remodeling of existing cinemas, particularly in towns and cities


such as Delhi, which are developing rapidly.

The increase in remodeling can be attributed in no small measure to the new means of presentation of motion pictures. The wide screen has come to stay and many theatre owners have found it necessary to make major structural alterations in order to install the latest wide screens.

Slight Improvement

In recent months, there has been a slight but distinct improvement in theatre business. This is a welcome change

from the downward trend that has been experienced in the industry following the lush war years and the immediate postwar period. The improvement in business can be attributed, among other things, to the improved economic position brought about to a great extent by two good monsoons during each of the last two years, an improvement in the calibre of the pictures in release, and the renovations made to many of the cinemas. Crippling taxes are having a deterrent effect on the progress of the industry. Exhibitors are obliged to pay a heavy entertainment tax as well as Municipal show tax and Octroi (a form of internal duty).
