Starlite IndoorOutdoor Theatre Living History

The Starlite opened June 23, 19-fifty-four, opening night movie was Beachead with Tony Curtis.  The indoor cinema opened Christmas Day 1971 with Doctor Zhivago on both screens. It operated as an independent until selling to Tom Moyer Luxury Theaters in 1979.  In 1997, now owned by Act 3 theaters, it closed right after Labor Day, with only a week's notice. The last night of operation was Sept. 4th, films were CopLand inside and My Best Friend's Wedding & Face/Off at the drive-in.

The Cow Creek Band Of Indians tribe bought the property in 1999, eventually leasing it to Umpqua Comm. College for a Construction Technology campus in 2006.  A decision was made to tear down the screen and they had a Grand Closing Sept. 28, 2007. An 'invitation only' was sent out for a showing of Grease and silent auction.  The screen was torn down 3 weeks later.

Although the indoor building has been remodeled for classroom & workspace, the box office still stands and the property is well maintained.  However, the loss of a local landmark, the great drive-in tower (60' x 100') is a bittersweet reminder of the Starlite glory days.
